The Issues

What We're Fighting For.

FATE takes on the systemic problems that affect families and students across public education — from special education rights to school board accountability.

These are not isolated incidents. They are patterns — repeated failures by school districts and public officials that harm students and families every day. FATE identifies these problems, educates families about their rights, and organizes communities to demand change.

Special Education & Disability Rights

Students with disabilities are entitled to a free and appropriate public education. When schools fail to deliver, families need support, advocacy, and legal knowledge to fight back.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), every student with a disability is entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provide additional protections against discrimination.

Despite these legal protections, school districts routinely fail students with disabilities. IEPs are written without meaningful parent input. Services are denied or delayed. Students are placed in inappropriate settings. Families who push back are worn down by bureaucratic processes designed to outlast them.

FATE advocates for full implementation of special education law in every school district. We educate families about their rights, help them navigate IEP and 504 processes, and organize collective advocacy when individual families are ignored.

What FATE Does

  • Educate families about IDEA, Section 504, and ADA rights
  • Support families navigating IEP and 504 processes
  • Identify patterns of denial and systemic failures
  • Advocate for appropriate placements and services
  • Organize collective advocacy when individual families are dismissed
  • Push for policy changes that strengthen protections

School Accountability

Public schools must answer to the communities they serve. FATE monitors school board decisions, district policies, and official conduct — and holds institutions accountable.

School boards are elected to represent the community. Superintendents and district administrators are public employees. Yet too often, these officials operate without meaningful oversight, make decisions that harm students and families, and face no consequences when they fail.

FATE monitors school board meetings, tracks district decisions, and documents patterns of misconduct, mismanagement, and failure. We engage elected officials, file public records requests, and organize community pressure when institutions refuse to be accountable.

Accountability is not just about punishment — it is about creating systems where families have real power to influence the institutions that serve their children. FATE fights for governance structures that are genuinely responsive to communities.

What FATE Does

  • Monitor school board meetings and district decisions
  • File public records requests and FOIA requests
  • Document patterns of misconduct and mismanagement
  • Engage elected officials and hold them accountable
  • Organize community pressure campaigns
  • Advocate for stronger oversight and governance reforms

Transparency in Public Education

Families deserve clear, honest information about policies, spending, programs, and decisions. Secrecy and opacity have no place in public education.

Public schools are funded by taxpayers and governed by elected officials. Families have a right to know how money is spent, what policies govern their children's education, how decisions are made, and what data shows about student outcomes.

Too many school districts operate in the shadows — burying important information in dense documents, holding meetings without adequate public notice, and resisting records requests. FATE fights to make public education genuinely public.

Transparency is a prerequisite for accountability. When families can see what is happening in their schools and districts, they can organize, advocate, and demand change. FATE works to open the doors that institutions try to keep closed.

What FATE Does

  • Advocate for open and accessible school board meetings
  • Support families in filing public records requests
  • Push for clear and accessible budget reporting
  • Challenge policies that limit public access to information
  • Educate families about open meetings and records laws
  • Document and publicize instances of institutional opacity

Equal Opportunity · Resource Equity · Systemic Fairness

Equity & Access

Every student deserves meaningful access to educational opportunities regardless of disability, income, language, or background. We fight for fairness in every school.

Equity in education means that every student — regardless of their zip code, family income, disability status, language, or background — has access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed.

In practice, public schools often reproduce and reinforce existing inequalities. Students from low-income communities receive fewer resources. Students of color face disproportionate discipline. English language learners are underserved. Students with disabilities are segregated rather than included.

FATE fights for equitable distribution of resources, elimination of discriminatory practices, and genuine inclusion of all students in high-quality educational opportunities. Equity is not charity — it is a legal and moral obligation.

What FATE Does

  • Identify and document inequitable resource distribution
  • Advocate against discriminatory discipline practices
  • Fight for inclusion of students with disabilities
  • Support families navigating language access barriers
  • Push for equitable school funding and resource allocation
  • Organize communities most affected by educational inequity

Meaningful Family Participation

Parents and families must have a genuine role in decisions affecting their children and their schools — not token participation, but real influence.

Federal law recognizes the importance of parent participation in public education. IDEA requires meaningful parent involvement in IEP development. Title I requires parent engagement plans. School boards are elected to represent their communities.

In practice, parent participation is often reduced to rubber-stamp processes — meetings where decisions have already been made, comment periods that change nothing, and advisory committees with no real power. Families from marginalized communities face additional barriers of language, access, and institutional hostility.

FATE fights for genuine family participation — structures and processes that give parents real influence over the decisions that affect their children. We train families to be effective advocates, organize collective voices, and push institutions to create meaningful engagement.

What FATE Does

  • Train families to be effective advocates at IEP meetings and school board meetings
  • Organize parent groups and community coalitions
  • Push for language access and translation services
  • Advocate for parent advisory committees with real authority
  • Challenge tokenistic participation processes
  • Build power among families most excluded from decision-making
